The Renaming of Chicago Avenue to Vikings Way

The following is a copy of the testimony by Arlene Fried at the Minneapolis Planning Commission’s Public Hearing on March 14, 2016.  The renaming was recommended by staff, but voted down by the commission.  It will now go to the Zoning and Planning Committee on April 7 and then to the full City Council on April 15.

The Renaming of Chicago Avenue to Vikings Way

The renaming of Chicago Avenue to Vikings Way has significant value for the Vikings; it would be remiss for Minneapolis to acquiesce to the Vikings’ request without getting something of value for Minneapolis in return.

One example of something that would be of value for Minneapolis would be to ensure that the Commons is always publicly accessible, even on Vikings game days.

Another example of something that would be of value for Minneapolis would be to ensure a Vikings’ supported funding plan for the ongoing maintenance of the Commons.

In closing, please do not ignore this great opportunity to benefit the City of Minneapolis and its taxpayers.

Thank you.
